IALL PLACEMENT AND INTERNSHIP GRANTS
1. Purpose of the Programme
IALL wishes to assist law librarians who are financially unable to undertake a placement, internship, unpaid fellowship, or an extended visit to a law library outside their own country.
This will be achieved by:
b. Providing advice in advance of any application, where necessary, to assist in identifying possible host institutions (however applicants themselves must have made provisional arrangements with a host institution prior to application).
The following guidelines indicate those who may apply.
b. Applicants should be employed in a law library. (Students or librarians not currently employed are ineligible.)
c. Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate promise and are likely to make a significant contribution to the profession. The grants are not open to experienced law librarians, IALL officers or members of the board of the IALL.
d. Applicants from any country who cannot otherwise afford to travel abroad for professional development.
e. Applicants who have not previously received a similar grant for professional development purposes, and who have not worked outside their own country. Those who have received a bursary or scholarship to attend IALL's Conference will be considered for this internship grant.
f. Applicants who can demonstrate that an institution has agreed to host them and who can supply a detailed outline of the proposed internship programme.
g. Applicants must submit a timely report for publication in IALL's official publication, International Journal of Legal Information.
IALL offers one grant each year to enable a librarian to undertake an internship, placement, non-stipendiary fellowship, or an extended library visit of no more than two months. IALL will help facilitate such arrangements. The grant recipient receives the following benefits:
4. Applications
Applications should be submitted to the Chair of the Scholarships Committee (see below for contact details) clearly stating 'Placement / Internship Grant', and describing the expected benefit of the internship. The letter should be accompanied by a full curriculum vitae / resume and two written references, one of which should be from your current employer. The employer must explicitly give permission for the applicant to be available for the placement / internship. The host institution should be identified and an outline of the proposed programme supplied. Any other funding available for the placement / internship should be declared in the application.
Enquiries and Applications should be in writing with full contact details to:

5. Timetable
Applications must reach the Chair of the IALL Scholarships Committee by the last day of April for internships starting no earlier than September of that same year, and no later than September of the following year. The Grants will be paid when the programme and dates of internship have been finalized (in advance of travel). After 30th September in the year following the award, the grant will expire and no monies will be paid.
6. Award
The Chair will forward all applications received by the deadline to the Scholarship Committee. The Committee will select the successful application and decide on the grant amount. The Chair will report the Committee's decisions to the IALL board and to the successful applicant - as soon as possible. The Committee may decide to make no award, defer the award, or to vary the amount of the award (the maximum is US$3,000). The Committee's decisions are final and there is no appeal.
Revised: February, 2009
