1. Purpose of the Programme
IALL wishes to assist law librarians who are normally unable to gain experience at leading law libraries overseas to undertake a placement / internship / non-stipendiary fellowship / extended visit to a law library outside their own country.
This will be done by:
b. providing advice, where necessary, in identifying suitable host institutions.
The following guidelines indicate the applicants to whom we are primarily hoping to offer opportunities.
b. Applicants should be in current employment in librarianship with significant legal context to their work. The grants are not designed for students or those not currently in employment.
c. Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate promise and are likely to make a significant contribution to the profession. The grants are not designed for the most senior law librarians who have already made significant contributions to the profession. IALL grants are not open to officers or members of the Board of the Association.
d. Applicants from whatever country who cannot otherwise afford to attend.
e. Applicants who have not received an IALL or similar grant for travel for professional development purposes and who have not worked outside their own country before. Those who have received a bursary or scholarship to attend the IALL conference will be considered.
f. Applicants who can demonstrate that an institution has agreed to host them and can supply an outline programme.
g. Applicants will undertake to write a report for publication by IALL.
IALL offers a grant each year to one person to enable them to undertake an internship / placement / non-stipendiary fellowship / extended visit of no more than 2 months. IALL expects to play a major role in establishing such arrangements. Each recipient receives the following benefits:
(A smaller grant may be awarded depending on circumstances, the duration of visit / placement, the location of the applicant and the location of the host institution.)
4. Applications
Application should normally be by letter to the Chair of the Scholarships Committee (see below for contact details) clearly stating 'Placement / Internship Grant' and describing the expected benefit of the internship. The letter should be accompanied by a full curriculum vitae / resume and two written references, one of which should be from the current employer. The employer must explicitly give permission for the applicant to be available for the placement / internship. The Host Institution should be identified and an outline programme supplied.
