Accommodations

Cambridge is a very walkable city, with most of the attractions and facilities located in the city centre including the following accommodation options; nothing is very far away!

The city has several small to medium sized hotels in the centre and allocations of rooms have been made at four different accommodation options.

Our accommodation suggestions for the Annual Course include three hotels – the Graduate by Hilton Cambridge, the Hilton Cambridge City Centre and the Arundel House Hotel – as well as accommodation at Jesus College where the conference programme is taking place.

The Graduate by Hilton Cambridge

The Graduate is a hotel situated alongside the River Cam. It is close to both Queens’ College and Darwin College and is approximately 10 minutes walk away from King’s Parade and King’s College Chapel. The Annual Course’ Opening Reception on Sunday 13 September will take place at this hotel in the Granta Suite and Gardens. The hotel is approximately 20 minutes walk to Jesus College where the programme for the Annual Course is taking place. The hotel has fitness centre and swimming pool facilities. The Hilton Cambridge City Centre hotel is ideally located in the heart of Cambridge and is the largest hotel in central Cambridge with nearly 200 rooms. The hotel is a modern design and close to Emmanuel College, and adjoining the main shopping area especially the Grand Arcade which opened in 2008. From the hotel it is a short 15 minute walk to the venue for IALL’s Opening Reception and, in the other direction, again only 15 minutes away on foot to Jesus College where the conference programme will be taking place. The hotel offers a restaurant and a piano bar lounge area on the first floor. Air conditioning is available in all rooms. There is good accessibility throughout the hotel.

Jesus College Cambridge, West Court accommodation

The West Court accommodation is situated within Jesus College and right next to the Conference Centre where the Annual Course is taking place. As with the hotels mentioned, breakfast is included in your booking. For those staying in the West Court accommodation breakfast is available each morning in the historic college dining hall. Jesus College is located 5-10 minutes walk from many historic sites of Cambridge. The accommodation at West Court is modern and meets hotel standards.

Please notethat air conditioning is not available in the rooms but windows can be opened and portable electric fans are provided.

Double bedroom (single occupancy) with breakfast: £155.00 + VAT per night

The Arundel House is a quaint, traditional hotel of character in Cambridge dating from the late Victorian period. It sits opposite the River Cam with Jesus Green on the opposite bank. The hotel is a 10-15 minute stroll across the picturesque Jesus Green to Jesus College where the conference programme is taking place and a similar distance into the centre of Cambridge. 10 minutes walk away is Quayside, opposite Magdalene College where there are punting opportunities.

Please note that the hotel does not have air conditioning but windows can be opened. Due to the age of the buildings it occupies there are some accessibility issues and there is no elevator between floors. 

Although rooms have not been allocated specifically for IALL, there is plenty of availability for the dates of the conference with a range of single rooms to doubles.

Cambridge Tourist Information which provides a listing of accommodations, for all budgets, including hotels, guesthouses and bed & breakfast accommodation.

The Hyatt Centric Cambridge hotel is located on the north west side of Cambridge, in a modern area known as Eddington. It is away from the centre of the city but within an easy bus ride to most locations.

The University Arms hotel is conveniently located in the city centre, next to Parker’s Piece, a well known open space in Cambridge.

The Hotel du Vin is conveniently located on Trumpington Street, Cambridge near to the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Two relatively low-cost options include:

Premier Inn, Cambridge City Centre (Corn Exchange / Lion Yard) Hotel which in a very centrally located in the main shopping area and just along from Market Square and Great St Mary’s Church.

The Ibis Cambridge Central Station which is just to the right of the main Cambridge railway station, and is 25-35 minutes walk, or a short bus ride, to the centre of the city.

Traveling to Cambridge

Cambridge has three railway stations – Cambridge, Cambridge North and the soon-to-be-opened Cambridge South. Cambridge Station (which is the main station) is the usual entry point to Cambridge and the one that attendees should aim to use.

Trains from London to Cambridge

Trains to Cambridge depart from both King’s Cross Station and St Pancras Station (these two major mainline London stations are situated at the same place, right next to each other). Trains are frequent and usually reliable.

Trains take between about 55 minutes (if non-stop) and 1 hour and 30 minutes (stopping at most stations along the way) to reach Cambridge.

From Heathrow Airport

For those arriving into Heathrow Airport, which is towards the southwest of the London, there are two rail options to get across the city to King’s Cross/St Pancras (KX/St P).

  • the Piccadilly Line (London Underground) will take you directly to KX/St P with no need for changes.
  • the Heathrow Express is a fast main-line train to Paddington Station. From there it is necessary to take the Hammersmith and City Line or the Circle Line (Eastbound) along to KX/St P.

From Gatwick Airport

If arriving into Gatwick, there are direct trains through to Cambridge from Gatwick Station.

Alternatively, take a train to KX/St P and change trains to continue the journey to Cambridge.

From London Stansted Airport

Stansted Airport is the closest airport to Cambridge. The station at Stansted is directly beneath the airport. The Stansted Express train to Cambridge which takes about 35-40 minutes with no changes.

From London Luton Airport

If arriving at Luton Airport, there is a shuttle bus to the local railway station, Luton Airport Parkway. Trains run to St Pancras International and, from there, a separate connection to Cambridge can be found.

Buses from Cambridge Station to Cambridge City Centre

Once at the main Cambridge Station, buses that go into the centre of Cambridge can be found at the bus stops which are diagonally to the left of the station on the opposite side of the road.   there is a taxi rank outside.

Taxis

Taxi services are available outside Cambridge Station. The usual services are Veezu (formerly Panther Taxis) and they can be found at the taxi rank.

If there are no taxis available or there is a long queue, it is possible to ring Veezu on +44 (0) 1223 715715.

Uber also operate in the city and be booked if individuals have an account.

Alternative travel options from all the airports around London to Cambridge

2. Booking at Taxi from an airport is also a possibility.

Taxis can be expensive and may cost around £200 + from Heathrow or Gatwick, perhaps £70-£100 from London Stansted.
