The 41st Annual Course of the International Association of Law Libraries

Geneva, Switzerland, 8-11 October 2023

Welcome to IALL’s 41st Annual Course

Presented by the ICRC Library and Geneva Graduate Institute Library,
in collaboration with the UN Library & Archives Geneva

at the Maison de la Paix, Geneva Graduate Institute,
8 – 11 October 2023

Often called the city of peace, Geneva is also the birthplace of international humanitarian law: efforts to develop international law in the city date back to the adoption of the First Geneva Convention in 1864. From the late 19th century to today, Geneva has developed into a major hub of agencies and organizations with global reach. The city is home to the largest UN Office after New York, UN specialized agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), and international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

This edition of the IALL annual course will focus on the fields of international law that have developed in conjunction with the work of multilateral organizations based in Geneva. The course’s program will build upon this unique setting and the wealth of knowledge generated by these organizations. A couple of sessions will also explore how such developments coexist with the Swiss legal system and institutions.

The conference venue is located on the campus of the Geneva Graduate Institute in the heart of Geneva’s international district. Visits will take us to the Palais des Nations – the historic headquarters of the League of Nations, now home to the UN Office at Geneva, to the ICRC headquarters and to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum.

We look forward to welcoming you in Geneva in October 2023. Watch this website for further details and please do not hesitate to contact the local planning committee at iall2023@icrc.org for any questions.
