Thank you, Stanford!

By: Mark Engsberg,
President, International Association of Law Libraries

The 40th Annual Course of the International Association of Law Libraries (IALL) was held in Palo Alto, California from Sunday, October 9, to Wednesday, October 12. This year’s theme was U.S. and International Approaches to Law, Justice and Technology: Learning from the Past and Strategies for the Future. The 2022 Annual Course was organized by staff from the Robert Crown Law Library at Stanford Law School . The Law Library’s director, Beth Williams, and the Local Planning Committee co-chairs, Sergio Stone and Taryn Marks, prepared and delivered a truly excellent program of substantive content, local excursions, and other networking events and opportunities which are the hallmarks of IALL Annual Courses.

Sergio, and Taryn were assisted by Alba Holgado, Will Huggins, Heather Joy, Grace Lo, Rachel Shields, Katie Siler, Ryan Tamares, and James Thajudeen, all members of the Robert Crown Law Library staff.  The IALL Board Liaison for the Stanford conference was Barbara Garvaglia.  Together, this able team helped make this year’s Annual Course such a memorable success.  On behalf of the entire Association, I wish to thank each program speaker and each member of the exceptional Local Planning Committee for their contributions to this outstanding experience. Thank you!  And, of course, this marvelous conference would not have been possible without the support of our wonderful sponsors.

Looking forward, the 41st Annual Course of the International Association of Law Libraries will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, Conference dates are 8-11 October 2023. Three institutions have joined forces to help plan next year’s conference: The Graduate Institute Library, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Library, and the United Nations Library Geneva. IALL’s Immediate Past President, Kurt Carroll, will serve as Board Liaison for the Geneva Annual Course.  Watch the IALL website for additional details about the 2023 Annual Course in Geneva which will appear early in the new year. Do plan to attend the Geneva Conference. If it is even half as good as the Stanford conference, you won’t want to miss it!
